Going Forward, Even If It Is Only a Little
Apostolic Advancement
There are seasons when we move forward that we have the energy and the clarity to do so with ease and certainty. And then there are seasons when it feels like the price gets higher with each step we take.
Genesis 26:13 (AV) — 13 And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great:
Mark 14:35 (AV) — 35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
One must admit that moving forward is easy at times because we have the momentum to push through the barriers that stand in our way, but other times there is tremendous resistance.
Sometimes it simply requires a bold faith to speak the word, and then at other times, we must make a difficult choice to obey even when we are tired and the road ahead is going to be rough.
Regardless of your season, one truth remains: God does not call His people to stand still spiritually.
He calls us forward.
That is the heart of apostolic advancement.
Apostolic advancement is more than a concept.
Apostolic Advancement is surrender.
It is a way of life.
It is the steady posture of a believer who has decided that no matter what comes, the will of God matters more than comfort, convenience, or personal preference. It is the daily choice to keep moving in relationship with God.
Genesis 26:13 says of Isaac that “the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great.”
Notice the order of Isaac’s advancement.
He went forward.
He grew.
He became.
That is how God works in our lives. Spiritual growth is never instant, but it is always intentional.
The Lord develops us as we keep walking with Him, trusting Him enough to move when He says move, and to stay steady when He says wait. We see that same spirit in an even more moving way in the life of Jesus.
In Mark 14:35 Jesus “went forward a little” in the garden.
That phrase is powerful. Jesus was standing on the threshold of the cross, under the crushing burden of what lay ahead, and still, He went forward. Not with applause. Just a little. But He went forward. That should speak to all of us.
There are times when advancement is not huge leap forward.
It is simply learning to pray when you are weary. It means being faithful when nobody recognizes it. It is refusing to retreat into fear, bitterness, or self-pity. In some seasons, going forward “a little” is not small at all. It is large step of commitment as it was for Jesus. Painful but still packed with promise of salvation for all.
We must also understand this: apostolic advancement is not the absence of conflict.
It is the commitment to work through challenges and difficulty so the kingdom of God can continue to advance.
But understand this truth, even if God is in what we are doing, there will be resistance. The word of God teaches us this principle.
Advancement does not mean the path will always be smooth. However, if we are willing to stay submitted and obedient even when the path is costly, the promise of spiritual growth and multiplication becomes a reality.
Sometimes that means we become honest about the changes we need to make and confront the things that hinder our growth. We can’t ignore the issues that need to be addressed.
In Galatians 2, Paul opposed Peter to his face because truth was at stake. That was not pride. That was apostolic maturity. Here was a man who cared more about God’s purpose than personal comfort.
If we are going to experience true apostolic advancement, we must be willing to handle problems in a godly way.
We must face what needs to be faced. We must protect unity without compromising truth. We must care enough about the kingdom to deal with what could weaken it.
This kind of life requires a transformed mindset.
It says, Not my will, but Yours be done.
It says, Not my agenda, but God’s agenda.
It says, Problems will not define me, and by God’s grace they will not stop me.
That is not positive thinking. That is spiritual surrender. And surrender is where real advancement begins.
We cannot manufacture apostolic advancement by talent, organization, or human effort. We cannot force it through personality or ambition. It is born when people read the Word of God, believe the Word of God, and obey the Word of God — even when obedience is uncomfortable.
God moves through yielded vessels, not just gifted ones.
The Bible gives us more than comfort. It gives us patterns, principles, and promises. We all love the promises of God, and we should. But promises are often realized as we submit ourselves to His principles and walk in His pattern. There is no shortcut around obedience. The way forward in the kingdom has always been surrender and submission.
If we are going to move forward, we must be willing to forgive.
We must forgive people.
We must forgive painful circumstances.
At times, we must learn to release ourselves from shame.
Many sincere believers are not stuck because God has failed them. They are stuck because they are trying to carry old wounds into a new season. God does not call us forward so we can drag chains behind us. He calls us forward so we can walk in freedom.
We need to remind ourselves who we are.
We are children of the King.
We are filled with the Spirit of God.
We are sent people.
We are not abandoned, and we are not powerless.
Jesus said, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
Acts 1:8 reminds us that we receive power through the Holy Spirit to be witnesses. That means our lives carry purpose. We are not here merely to survive. We are here to walk in truth, live in power, and bear witness to the goodness of God in a world that desperately needs Him.
And let us be careful to remember that apostolic advancement is not competition. It is not about comparing ourselves with one another. It is not about position, personality, or recognition. It is about faithfully living the Word of God in everyday life. Apostolic practices still produce apostolic results.
Jesus gave us the pattern clearly: deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me. That is still the way forward.
Daily surrender. Daily responsibility. Daily obedience. Daily following.
And when we live that way, God moves us forward. He may not move quickly, and it may not be comfortable, but it will always be forward. But when God is the one leading, even going forward “a little” is enough to become the beginning of something very great.
Yours for the Kingdom,
Pastor Kinsey
